Everyone buys organic for different reasons, according to a 2016 Australian survey by Compare The Market– whether it’s for health-related purposes, concern for the environment, or for better taste, the majority of people actually avoid buying organic because they feel it is more expensive. Fewer Pesticides and Heavy Metals
What’s labeled as organic is pretty much almost guaranteed to be grown without the use of artificial fertilizers or synthetic pesticides, though The National Organic Standard does allow the use of some synthetic substances. But organic is the healthiest way to go for your gut. This is the safest way to not consume things that contain this. While you may not see an instant impact from eating regular food, health experts warn about the impact of repeated exposure. Herbicides can contain carcinogens, which are harmful to the body. They literally cause cancer. There’s even been a study done that found a link to ADHD in children and pesticides. Meaning that pesticides are having harmful effects on the brain. And finally, it’s been found to be linked to a lower sperm count. With so many things being linked to consuming non-organic food, doesn’t it make you think about what you’re putting in your body? Organic food has also been linked to having less heavy metals in them, according to The British Journal of Nutrition.
More Healthy Fats
With meat and milk, there are 50 percent more omega-3 fatty acids in the organic version. That means you’re getting more unsaturated healthy fat into your organic food diet. What makes such a huge difference between organic and non-organic? There could be differences in the way that the livestock is raised, with a grass-fed diet and more time spent outdoors, according to the 2016 study done by The British Journal of Nutrition. If the public were to switch over to consuming only organic products, then our omega-3 intake would increase without creating extra calories or fat.
No Antibiotics Or Synthetic Hormones
While antibiotics are often given to livestock to boost their immunity to illness, there are also consequences to using antibiotics and synthetic hormones long term. It’s easier for farmers to raise livestock in unsanitary conditions that way. With loopholes still in the FDA’s legislation, according to Business Insider, there’s no way to know what kind of antibiotics are being put into the livestock that we consume on a daily basis. That’s why it’s so much better and cleaner to eat organic. By eating these types of foods, you’re contributing to antibiotic drug resistance, which means that when an outbreak happens of a disease, the general public can’t be protected against it. Organic meat and dairy also can’t have synthetic hormones in them because it’s been linked to cancer. That’s why it’s so much better to indulge in organic food.
More Antioxidants, In Some Cases
A recent six-year study done by The Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry found that organically grown onions actually have about 20 percent more antioxidants in them. That means that organically grown food is that much healthier than its counterpart. Long story short, the benefits of eating organically can outweigh the costs that have people so troubled about making the switch. Eating organic doesn’t have to mean that it’s not going to be worth it. There are ways to save while eating the best food that you can.
